2012 Ladies Luncheon

Our annual Ladies Luncheon was once again held in the Blenheim suite at Coulsdon Manor Hotel. We have held our premier luncheon at Coulsdon Manor for a few years now, mainly because of the fantastic value for the meals and wonderful ambience of the hotel and the Blenheim Suite. Once again the hotel and staff gave us wonderful service. A number of members and their guests commented on the high quality of the meal. The Ladies luncheon is the chance for members to pay tribute to the ladies and widows of past members. However, we did have a late arrival when confused member was telephoned and reminded that the luncheon was not next week! The toast to the ladies was given by Andrew Banfield OBE our Immediate Past Chairman and a reply was given by Pauline Payne, the wife of our 2012 chairman. Our 2012 chairman, Ian Payne, gave the […]

2012 May ladies meeting

After the tremendous success of the joint meeting we held in 2011 it was agreed by everyone that we must have a meeting each year when ladies are to be included. This meeting will not overshadow our annual ‘Ladies Luncheon’ which takes place later in the year. It is to be a normal Probus meeting which includes the ladies. The lunch was excellently organised by Andrew Kellard with circular tables but as Andrew growled, “none of those horrible paper tablecloths” The food and service was up to it’s usual superb standard by Chris and his team. After lunch we had a speaker, organised by Phil Munson. Sadly, Phil is still recovering from his bad fall and could not join us. The speaker was Jack Devlin who described his life as a magician and how he took up the profession. Jack’s talk was not only interesting and humorous, but was interspersed […]

2012 River Thames Cruise

Considering the bad weather and rain we have been experiencing just lately, and forecasted for the day of our outing, (all in the week that the water companies had declared an official drought and imposed a hosepipe ban) we were very lucky to have the sun shining for our spring cruise on Old Father Thames. After a pleasant coach trip to Maidenhead we boarded our cruise boat for a four hour cruise to Henley. The master of the boat gave us a commentary during the trip, pointing out the varied wildlife that has returned to the Thames since the environmental clean-up of the upper Thames. The upper Thames is now one of the cleanest rivers in Europe. Not only did we see the usual swans and mallards, but a host of other water fowl that have made the Thames their home. Some of us were even lucky enough to catch […]

2012 Annual General Meeting

Our March meeting, which this year fell on the 1st March, was our Annual General Meeting. The outgoing chairman, Andrew Banfield, gave a summary of his year in office, including outings, luncheons and his chairman’s outing on the steam railway. The various committee members gave reports on the activities they were responsible for over the year. The Honorary Treasurer, Roger Davis, gave a report on the audited accounts for the year, and reported a healthy surplus. The chairman presented a cheque for £1000.00 to his charity of the year, the Royal Marsden Cancer Hospital. Janet Tobin from the Fund Raising department of the Royal Marsden thanked Coulsdon Probus for the donation and gave us an outline of just how much Marsden relies on contributions from the public, clubs and sponsored events. Andrew’s final duty as chairman was to inaugurate the new chairman, Ian Payne. Ian let us know that his […]
