Club News February meeting: Chairman, Andrew Jurenko, welcomed 19 members and 3 guests. Our speaker was caught up on the M25 and gave apologies. Fortunately, Dennis Evans stepped in – see page 2. Chairman’s charity raised £40 and Raffle £17. Almoner, Andrew Kellard reported: Alan Bird’s wife is ill and Alan (92) has decided to retire from Probus; John Guest is recovering; John Morgan still has trouble with his knees. March is our AGM. Current committee agreed to re-stand for their current positions with Roger Gourd moving up to Chairman. The annual subscription in April will be £20 (not collected in 2021 and £30 previously). Speaker costs are often up to £100. Members asked  to volunteer to give talks and to be on stand-by. January 6th Lunch was cancelled due to the fast spreading of the Omicron version of Covid. We are pleased to be able to resume our monthly lunches this February. The sad news was given in January’s newsletter of the passing away of Derek Bass and Peter Wilson. Derek’s cremation service was held in January attended by family. A Service to celebrate Derek’s Life, will be held at St John’s Church, Old Coulsdon, once the family in Switzerland are happier to travel. Peter’s funeral was held on 27th January and several of our members attended. A eulogy follows. We are sad to hear that Jean Carter (Ken’s widow) passed away in December. HAPPY NEW YEAR TO MEMBERS AND THEIR FAMILIES January 6th Lunch cancelled due to spread of Omicron Covid. December Christmas Lunch: 50 members, partners and guests attended a most enjoyable lunch. Unfortunately, our guest Reverend Malcolm Newman was unable to attend due to Covid contact but Our Chairman, Andrew Jurenko, took the opportunity to tell us about Ankylosing Spondylitis and the work of his charity for the year, NASS, for which £91.85was raised. The Raffle towards our Club’s funds raised £52. A special thank you for organising the event went to Ian and Pauline Payne who were assisted by Andrew Banfield and Jenny. The table centres were raffled to a lady on each table. Sad news: two of our members have recently passed away. Derek Bass quite suddenly in late November. Club News October meeting: Chairman, Andrew Jurenko, welcomed 16 members and guests Terry Davis (to assist speaker Roger Gourd) and Simon Brew (to trial ‘cashless’ collections). The Chairman announced the sad news that we had lost three past chairmen: Martin Bergs (died 7th September), Reg Baker (died 1st October) and Tony Simpson (died 6th October). A short silence was observed. Almoner, Andrew Kellard reported absences: David Holmes’ wife is under the weather; Alan Bird hurt his back on the kitchen table; Ian Cullen is in hospital; Gerry Thompson has a hospital appointment; Ray Stemp is in a retirement home in Caterham.
